I believe that some of us watched the headies last night, however if you didn’t watch it, here is a recap of what happened according to OYE.
The stage looked better this year, lights and sound have had some improvements as well but there is still a lot of room for a better production.
Opening Act By Kaffy’s Dancers
In my opinion this was the highlight of the entire show, the dancers paid homage to the October 20th protest. It gave me goosebumps, a beautiful performance.
Host of the Event
Bovi & Nancy threw shade everywhere from Davido & Burna plus wizkid sprinkled it with blogger jokes towards Ubi Franklin becoming a blogger due to the pandemic joining his colleague Tunde Ednut.
Nancy changed into black playsuit with blinding beadings that was wow but I wished it was a dress, the playsuit style cheapened the look.
Honorable mention is that wizkid BLOW joke Bovi gave that went from PG to X-rated in seconds…lol
In order of appearance;
There was a short guy that one best video of the year for Davido’s song “one million”. He was quite proud I must say in comparison to the producer of year Pheelz who won for Teni’s billionaire who seemed more grateful to have won his award. The other guy looked like they forced him to be at the award instead of sleeping or something.
Best R&B Single – Tattoo by Firboy – I really like Firboy’s music but for that category, if we were critically looking at an R&B song, Omah lay’s Bad Influence did better numbers and was bigger than Firboy’s Tattoo. To make matters worse, Simi’s Duduke was also in that category but Firboy’s Tattoo still won over that. I think if we should more information on the criteria or framework used in making the decision.
An hoodlum collected Brymo‘s award on his behalf. Again I do not understand how the song won Recording of the Year over Wizkid‘s smile and other songs in that category but again only the judges can explain their thought process.
On top of it, they said Brymo was still on his way, really…. sir
Best Female Vocalist – Niniola, this was well deserved and she showed out on stage by letting us hear what she was working with in the vocal department Yassssss….
Best Vocal Performance Male – The lady award presenter was really excited to be presenting while her partner Osi Suave seemed like he was not at the right event. This category was very tight sha, Praiz won, though I do not know the song but we can expect him to kill it vocally. His beards needs to go before he looks completely homeless, a little reduction will make the grooming look pristine.
Best Street Hop Artiste – The presenter here though, I’m not sure what she thought she was there to present but sis it is STREET HOP awon ti Naira marley, speaking like she was at an inaugural formal event and she still screamed on top, Just WOW sis.
The category was tight but I do not think Mayorkun’s geng was bigger than Naira Marley’s Ma fo 😒. MA FO VS GENG, Geng is a cool vibe but Ma FO is STREET and the category is called street not premium street.
Rookie of Year – Bad Boy Timz – Alright …. I was rooting for Zinolessky though
Best Pop Single – Nobody By Neptune, Yes, Fem was a big song but remember that this song was at the top of chart long before FEM dropped and was still charting after FEM dropped. It is up for debate anyways, I do not like the song by the way.
Best Collabo – Ladipoe ft Simi Won this – well deserved, speech was great as well.
Vee & Laycon – they were cool at first then awkward, then CRINGE & it got better, they presented Best Alternative Sound to Moelogo
RAP Song – the DPO’s daughter presented this award- Bop Daddy Won
Next one presenter was the aspire to expire man who told us about the Headies Testimony, telling us the struggles of Headies…. thanks sir, Brand Manager Extraordinaire, he preached the gospel and gave nuggets on content, I believe. He briefly forgot that he was there to give award for Best R&B Album which Firboy won, I guess it’s Firboy’s year….. The album was major for the year in review actually.
Best Alternative Album – The Cavemen- Happy for them
Next Rated Category: Omah Lay won but all 3 of them in that category came on stage to support Omah lay this was great given that Davido, Burna and wizkid are fighting about something that we cannot understand. Bloody Millennials.
Lyricist on the Roll: ill bliss won, he was very passionate about his win and the state of the country
A lady in shiny red velvet dress sang beautifully, she gave a gracious and beautiful performance and I think the best performance of the night.
I believe Stoneboy performed from Ghana beside the sea which was really nice even though picture needs to be better but we thank God for growth.
I missed some part of Chike’s performance but is performance was ok, I did not get the chance to enjoy the band on the violin but I cannot say it was a terrible performance cause it looks like SOUND was a major problem. All in All, Chike’s performance was relatively OK, however, it did not WOW’ me
Bad boy Tims – needs to do better because that performance was lackluster, anyways I think it was all vibes with all the hailing he was doing. I think he was there to simply catch vibes.
Zinolessky – I like how he controlled the band to join his key given that both parties started with different keys, he continuously tried to correct his key but no luck. A for effort because I think the band was the problem here.
Jamopyper – This guy had a better performance, band was on point, he was on point. They were all hailing wizzy, like they came there for him.
I like that the headies gave these youngies the stage to showcase themselves
DJ Neptune’s Introduction with the little brag – The performance was lackluster just like every other pop performance, laycon’s rap verse was ok pretty good. “Nobody Nobody Nuuuebsupdy No
The Cavemen Band: It started shaky but it got better. I am certain that their set is usually better than last night’s performance. The Singer/drummer was a joy to watch, never thought I would be interested in watching a local Igbo band perform, this was a delight.
The man of the hour – Firboy performed and the band was shitty again. He tried to give it his best but something was not working
Next thing I knew, HIP TV stopped showing the event live on TV and twitter informed that Wizkid won viewers choice award by the time I got to Youtube to continue watching they had ended the streaming.
At that point, I called it a night, I believe the Headies can becomes the biggest award show in Africa but they need to be do better with production, I’m guessing funding and sponsors are their biggest issue but then it is the hustle.
